Smart Key & Proximity Key Programming

Smart-key systems are the most manufacturer-specific part of automotive locksmithing. Frequency, protocol and security handshake differ between makes and often between model years of the same vehicle. Some platforms impose a security wait during registration; others require every accepted key to be present at the same time.

Have: vehicle year, make and model, and trim if you know it; whether the vehicle starts with a button or a turned key; how many smart keys currently exist, including any you cannot find; whether a mechanical key blade is present in the existing fob. Proof of identity and vehicle ownership or written authorisation is required before any key is originated or programmed.

A smart key — also called a proximity key or push-to-start fob — is not a key in the mechanical sense. It is a transmitter the vehicle looks for continuously, and it usually contains a hidden emergency blade for the door. Programming one means registering the transmitter with the vehicle and, on most platforms, invalidating credentials that should no longer be trusted.

It is offered as mobile service across Hampton Roads, Tidewater, the Peninsula, Western Tidewater, the regional airports and Virginia's Eastern Shore. Whether a specific vehicle is eligible is confirmed before a job is treated as scheduled.

For eligible jobs, mobile service can be coordinated at many accessible locations when the owner or authorized party can approve service and site rules allow access.
